Wood and wood products are among Vietnam’s top exports to Japan, accounting for 10.8% of nearly $16 billion in total wood exports in 2024. The first two months of 2025 saw wood export revenues rise 12.4% year-on-year to $2.52 billion. Japan, along with China and the US, is one of Vietnam’s top three wood export markets.

Despite strong demand, Japan is a strict market with high standards and unique consumer preferences. Vietnamese firms face challenges in quality consistency, design, and branding.

Experts suggest that long-term planning, skilled labor development, and digital transformation are key for success. Japanese buyers prioritize functionality and compatibility over brand names, with a growing trend toward eco-friendly wooden homes and interiors.

Companies like Tan Vinh Cuu Corp. have started developing Japan-style wooden houses for both local resorts and future exports to Japan, signaling potential growth in this niche.
