Touring a historic hill in Dien Bien Phu

Vietnam's communist forces defeated the French in the world-known Battle of Dien Bien Phu in the northwestern province of Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954, marking the end of French colonial rule in Vietnam and Indochina.

Tourists visit a crater on Hill A1 in Dien Bien Phu

The Vietnamese troops, commanded by General Vo Nguyen Giap, surrounded Dien Bien Phu, cutting off French supply lines.

Battle remnants can still be found on Hill A1 in Muong Thanh Ward, Dien Bien Phu, including the place where French commander Christian de Castries was working during the battle, French trenches and craters.
